Authorship and Fame

aDidamu sUrana (fl. CE 1720-85?) was a famous prauDha kavi. It is sometimes thought that he was associated with the Vijayanagara Empire towards its last days. However, it is a highly unlikely story. It is more likely that his father aDidamu bAla BhAskara (CE 1690-1760?), who was also an accomplished writer originally hailed from the rAyalaseema region. sUrana himself does not seem to have lived there. Adidam Rama Rao (1879-1956) authored a fictional biography of sUrakavi in 1919.

aDidamu sUrakavi was a great scholar, prolific writer and ASu kavi. His extempore cATu poems are famous. He composed kavi jana ranjanam (candramatee pariNayam) on the life of hariScandra and candramati in three cantos. In some respects, this work imitates the vasu caritra by rAma rAja BhUShaNa (and hence is a pilla vasu caritra!). He also wrote a ChandO grantham (work on rhetoric, meter, etc.) by name Andhra candrAlOkam and another work on prosody (alankAram) by name kavi samSaya vicChEdamu. He was the author of a well-known dictionary (in verse form!) 'Andhra nAma SEShamu.' It is the SEShamu (companion work) for two other very famous lexicons in verse, viz., Andhra nAma sangrahamu and Andhra ratnAkaramu by paiDipATi lakshmaNa kavi (fl. CE 1619-37?). Andhra nAma samgrahamu by paiDipATi lakshmaNa maMtri, Andhra TeekA viSEShamu by aDidamu sUrakavi and sAmba niGhamTuvu by kastUri ranga kavi(fl. 1750s?) were all put together and published as a single volume by Vavilla Press in 1929. These niGhanTuvulu (lexicons) contain useful information and meanings for many words of acca tenugu (pure Telugu) origin.

Surana's rAmalingESa Satakamu is famous for its attack on social oligarchy, feudatory rulers and Zamindars. In this work he humorously lambastes many corrupt practices of his day.

His father aDidamu bAla BhAskara composed an acca tenugu rAmAyaNamu.
